In Picassos blue period he painted a lot of women heavily bowed producing haunting ghostly images that portray heavy emotional burdens. The almost monochromatic use of blue and the traditional association of Madonna further compounds this image. Picasso often featured themes in regards to religion poverty and the growth from which female figure moves away from prostitution to the hallowed portrayal of the mother figure.
